Subaru led badge1/2/2023 ![]() The main difference between the Solterra is that the bZ4X will offer both front-wheel drive and AWD options, while the Subaru will come with only the latter. Toyota upped its stake in FHI to 16.2% of the company three years later and the first fruits of their partnership were the original Subaru BRZ and Toyota GR-86 (then called the Scion FR-S) and a variety of Japanese-market micro trucks. The two automakers have been partners since Toyota bought a big chunk of General Motors’ stake in Subaru’s parent company, Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI), in 2005. Given the direct similarities between the bZ4X and the Solterra, Subaru stressed that its EV will remain a true Subaru-Goh explained it as a collaboration versus a badge-engineering job. ![]() Subaru declined to confirm battery specifics but Garrick Goh, the Solterra’s Car Line Planning Manager on site, indicated that the Solterra will target at least a 220-mile range and a 15 to 80% charge time under one hour. In classic Subaru style, the Solterra will be available only equipped with all-wheel-drive (AWD), made possible by a dual-motor layout providing 215 horsepower and 248 pound-feet of torque. Subaru intends the Solterra- alongside its Toyota bZ4X twin-to serve as an everyday driver for the brand’s loyal customers, who lean toward higher education and income levels and increasingly believe their next vehicle will be fully electric. The Solterra crawled up a steep dirt hill and through a man-made rocky stream to demonstrate Subaru’s commitment to the rugged capability of its first full EV. The automaker showed a pre-production prototype in advance of the Los Angeles Auto Show that’s built in partnership with Toyota. Subaru joined the EV revolution today with the debut of the all-new Solterra electric crossover. ![]() ![]() The 2023 Subaru Solterra cuts a more handsome profile than the automaker’s current Forester and Ascent crossovers thanks to its lower roofline and muscular fenders, but if the look seems familiar, it’s probably because much of the styling is shared with Toyota’s closely-related bZ4X. ![]()
